| Pet food: Gourmet vs. good enough
Grammy's Pot Pie needed a little more salt. So did the chicken thighs with peas, carrots and potatoes made by Fromm. The pumpkin crumble dessert from Nutro smelled good and had plenty of ground cinnamon but having less than 100 calories per serving helped make up for its bland taste. These recipes may sound good to you, but the food typically doesn't find its way to a dinner table. This fare - complete with slogans like "It's not dinner without dessert" - is for dogs and cats. Recent pet-food recalls are driving pet owners to consider gourmet options. At the very least, experts say, pet owners are becoming more educated about what they're serving their animals. Those choices can be beneficial for a dog or cat, but they're likely to be more expensive and in some cases may not be worth the money.

Dancing with Bergeron
"Dancing With the Stars" host Tom Bergeron predicts this season's final four celeb dancers will be Ian Ziering, Laila Ali, Joey Fatone , and Heather Mills. CN8's Sara Edwards caught up with the former Boston TV guy on the set of the hit show, which airs tonight and tomorrow. Bergeron, whose dressing room is across the hall from "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul, gave Edwards a peek into what goes on at the dancing reality show, now in it s fourth season. "It is mind - boggling how popular the show has gotten," said Bergeron, who used to guest host with Edwards during her days on "Evening Magazine" on WBZ-TV. Edwards interviewed former "Cheers" star John Ratzenberger, who Edwards called a trouper. "I think it's very difficult for all of them," said Edwards. "But John was called at the last minute to fill in for ["The Sopranos" actor] Vincent Pastore, who was injured during training." Edwards, whose report airs tomorrow night on CN8's "Backstage," predicts Ziering, who is dancing with pro and two-time winner Cheryl Burke, is going to go home with the disco ball trophy.
A spectacular Sunday
Easter is almost here, and what better way to turn the day into a celebration than with a midday brunch for family and friends? Pancakes or crepes, waffles and French toast may sound pedestrian. But the versions here are special enough to be the star of a festive holiday meal. They're enhanced with toppings, fillings and unexpected twists, such as cocoa in the waffle batter. Chocolate waffles sound very decadent and are a taste treat. Because these are made with unsweetened cocoa powder, though, instead of melted bar chocolate, they are not really as rich as they sound. I adore the flavor of Scharffen Berger and Valrhona cocoa powders, but Hershey's now has a high-end cocoa powder on supermarket shelves as well. You don't need butter on these, just a healthy drizzle of berry sauce and some creme fraiche if you like.
Pack on the Pounds Cake
History shows that the name pound cake originated from the fact that the original pound cake recipes contained one pound each of butter, sugar, flour and eggs. I am not convinced that is the real reason. I think the real meaning behind the name pound cake comes from the fact that you will certainly pack on the pounds if you eat a cake with that much butter and sugar in it. I think that those pounds are well worth it when you have something as fabulous as a pound cake. There is nothing quite like a real dense and moist pound cake to satisfy a sweet tooth. With a real pound cake, each bite seriously melts in your mouth. Mmmmmm… As much as I love real pound cake, I'm not looking to add on a bunch of weight right now. I wish I had the dilemma of trying to gain weight… unfortunately, gaining weight is really not something that is difficult for me to do.
Cheese whizzes discover Wisconsin's finest
Follow the trail of cheese in southwest Wisconsin, and you'll learn as much about pride of place and concern for livestock as quality of product. For example: Anne Topham of Fantome Farm, Ridgeway, passes up a chance to schmooze with a dozen national food journalists because of an unborn kid -- a goat in the throes of labor. Dane Huebner of Cedar Grove Cheese in Plain explains that it is environmentally important to purify wastewater -- whey and spilled milk -- instead of simply spreading it onto farmland as a fertilizer. Dan Patenaude of Uplands Cheese Co. in Dodgeville describes his cows' ideal diet as "kind of a salad bar," high in protein and energy. The company makes cheese about 75 days per year, only when the cows can eat fresh grasses, and has no intention to expand.
Coffee Helps Fight the War in Afghanistan
"We are not trying to open up a forum to discuss our beliefs on the War; as we have stated more than once;" stated Joe Wells; co-founder and coffee roaster at Island Joes Gourmet Coffee Roasting Company located in old town Key West, Florida. "We just feel we should do something; as everyone should; no matter how small or large; to let the men and women keeping America a safe place to sleep at night; know we are thinking of them. We get up in the morning; have cup of coffee; take the kids to school and are able to enjoy many other things in our everyday life. Why? Because we have men and women overseas making sure we can enjoy these everyday simple pleasures in life. So we decided to do more than just talk about it. As a matter of fact; we would not even be making our helping hand public; but we felt by going public we could offer others the opportunity to offer a helping hand." Let start by reviewing the one of the first emails Island Joes Coffee received from Trooper.
Presenting the Coffee Machine That Reads Minds
Coffee machine company says it will lead the way for "super-automatic" coffee machines that use artificial intelligence. This new breed of learning coffee makers could be introduced in the next several years, predicts coffee machine retailer. Lafayette, IN (PRWEB) April 24, 2007 -- It sounds like something out of a sci fi novel: futuristic appliances that turn on and prepare favorite recipes based on their owner's thoughts. But for Lafayette, Indiana based JL Hufford Coffee and Tea, such a future is not all that distant. Today, the company announced that it has begun provisional patent exploration into coffee machines that learn and react to their users. James Pappas, JL Hufford Coffee and Tea's Product Manager, believes that the technology enabling an appliance to learn and react to its user's preferences, so-called "ubiquitous computing", is already both available and affordable.
