East Village thrift shop gets classy redo

The Salvation Army thrift store in the East Village area has undergone what local designer Beau Fodor calls an extreme makeover.

Now called Sally's, the resale shop has the feel of a higher-end store, Fodor said.

The store got a good cleaning and several coats of paint in coordinating colors, he said. It now has more of a boutique look and the furniture is displayed in a showroom fashion.

Several new mattresses and box springs have been paired with donated bed frames and would make good beds for children, Fodor said.

The outside of the building has the Salvation Army's name on it.

Sally's is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

Mars matters to today's teens

Steven Squyres, the lead engineer of the Mars Exploration Rover project, has given us some answers that might help us to better understand what's going on with Mars.

Alan Sokol: The Mars rovers were designed to run for about 90 days, but now they're going past 1,100 days. How did you manage this?

Steven Squyres: It was partly luck. Part of it was good work. We built good hardware, and we're proud of that. But we got very lucky with the weather. We thought that dust was going to build up on the rover solar panels and kill the vehicle. Dust indeed did build up, but on several occasions we've had lucky gusts of wind that have cleaned the dust off the vehicles and given us a new lease on life. So we've had some good fortune.

Sokol: Myself and a few of my friends at school are quite interested in the whole Mars Rover project, but some of my classmates aren't interested at all.

NavDog - Maps Your Events

Navdog is a clever social mapping application that enables users to search and locate events and other local happenings. Users are requested to setup a simple profile and login sequence and setup their "home" location. Once created, the user then simply logs in and local events are presented. Browse events, register as a member, create a list of saved events, add and create your personal event listings.

For example, once my homebase was setup in Fort Collins, CO, I then saw a number of local event listings like concerts, festivals and other cool things. For advertisers, Featured Listings are presented in a very visible manner and eye-catching graphics and logos are also displayed in a floating window... in my case I was presented with details of The Taste of Vail Festival and a non-intrusive Starbucks logo was also presented to me.

Kasinger Foundation fundraiser features wine, chocolate, jazz

Sweet memories will find expression Sunday in the first Chocolate, Wine and Jazz Fest to benefit the Christina Henry Kasinger Foundation.

Mrs. Henry Kasinger, a physical therapist who dedicated her career to serving pediatric patients, died of leukemia March 8, 2005. Her parents, Diana and James Henry of New Bedford, decided to establish a foundation in her name to provide equipment to the pediatric rehabilitation department of the Schwartz Center for Children in Dartmouth.

"We just somehow want to keep the memory of her life alive" until her daughter Julia, now 5, "can take over" the effort, Mrs. Henry said.

The interest in the Schwartz Center came about through a family connection. While Christina was attending Wheaton College, her niece Shelby was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Dining with Duvall: A Pair to Meet

When Bistro Verdu opened its doors in Montrose almost four years ago, the Spanish and French-influenced restaurant had no liquor license. Customers brought their own wine until the owner-chef Michael Ruiz's application for a license was approved. Faced with the task of designing a good wine list, he enlisted the help of wine consultant Jeff Zimmitti.Today the two men are neighbors on Verdugo Road. At Bistro Verdu, Michael continues to build a loyal customer base. Jeff's new Rosso Wine shop, next door to the bistro, attracts and educates local wine aficionados with an ambitious weekly wine-tasting schedule.I went to visit with Michael and Jeff on a sunny afternoon last week. Michael was busy in his kitchen, setting up for the dinner rush, so I hopped up on a stool at the wine bar to chat with Jeff.Jeff grew up in Connecticut and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career in 1985.

Mac and cheese: The gooier the better

GOOEY cheddar robes tender curls of pasta, perhaps some crunchy breadcrumbs lounge on top — this is all-American fare, this is macaroni and cheese.

Whether decadently rich, light and creamy or from the famous blue box, mac and cheese occupies a space in the comfort-starved hearts of many Americans. While gussied-up gourmet versions, laced with truffles or imported cheese, are hip in trendy restaurants, deep down this dish is simple, straightforward comfort food — the stuff childhood is made of.

Last month we asked readers for their favorite macaroni and cheese recipes. The first submission we received was from a self-proclaimed "cheeky" reader who sent us a typewritten vote for Stouffer's frozen macaroni and cheese. Well Cheeky, we admire your spirit and we have to agree, Stouffer's is pretty tasty.
