PIZZAS TOSSED WITH FUN
As a rule, I don't like barbecue sauce on my pizza. But at FatKats Extreme Pizza in Georgetown, I had to order the "Cowboy Extreme," barbecue sauce and all -- that's the pie that won the Midwest Regional Pizza Bake Off sponsored by Pizza Today magazine. I don't think I'd rate the Cowboy Extreme the best pizza in the Midwest -- but the combination of sweet barbecue sauce, tangy banana peppers, salty bacon and mild chicken surprised me. The flavors tangled well, making for a good, if non-traditional, pie. FatKats, which is just off Interstate 75 on Paris Pike in Georgetown, has been around for almost two years. The decor includes skateboards and roller blades tacked to the walls and helmets hanging from the ceiling. It's a casual atmosphere -- perhaps a bit too casual as the service is slow and there's a long wait for the pizza.
Nine ways to splurge your tax rebate (and one way to save)
That was part of our inspiration in putting together a dining guide. For options with a little more panache, check out our dining guides at the end of our calendar section or go online for more dining choices at www.theimpulseonline.com. 9. Splurge: fight, fight! Oh, "Def Jam: Icon," just when I stop condoning violence, you make a game where I can fight Young Jeezy in the Penthouse as Ghostface Killah. For Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, costs $59.99 at ebgames.com. 1. Save: so you don't feel guilty Consider the 9-month ING Direct Certificate of Deposit with 5.05 percent interest. It's better than a savings account because of the amount of interest you'll be earning. Then, once you make some money off of it, maybe you'll feel more like splurging (see related items above).
Saving Starbucks' Soul
Chairman Howard Schultz is on a mission to take his company back to its roots. Oh, yeah—he also wants to triple sales in five years "A heady aroma of coffee reached out and drew me in. I stepped inside and saw what looked like a temple for the worship of coffee.... It was my Mecca. I had arrived." — Howard Schultz on his first visit to Starbucks in 1981 .
A Gourmet in Party Central
What's a hungry girl to do about her meat? Rich or poor, we're getting kicked where it hurts right in our growling stomachs. Every meal is an unhappy meal. First, it's foie gras; now it's KFC. I was on the verge of sending away to PETA for my "free vegetarian starter kit" after I got a load of the new Pam Anderson video: Here's the Baywatch chick, plump and juicy breasts for once unexposed, looking practically schoolmarmish, cluck-clucking away about cruelty-free chicken and urging me to boycott Colonel Sanders. Is this a fricking topsy-turvy world we live in or what? .
Making a market
Paulette Jacobson picks out produce at the Nugget Market in Roseville. She said she is drawn by the selection and quality of food there. Shoppers can pick up a pack of American cheese in the dairy aisle or browse the 400 gourmet cheeses on black granite countertops. "You go there and you know you're someplace special," a consultant said. Sacramento Bee/Paul Kitagaki Jr. See additional images .
Double the fun of Del Shores in Palm Springs
A Del Shores doubleheader at the newly renovated Palm Canyon Theatre alternates two comedies in repertory programming through April 15. "Sordid Lives," a favorite in the desert, is being reprised. It is directed by William Layne. Don Hillier is directing "Daddy's Dyin' ... Who's Got the Will?" Radio personality Joey English takes the role of a singing ex-con in "Sordid Lives." The story about a family of misfits brought together for the funeral of the matriarch, who died when she tripped over her lover's prosthetic legs and hit her head, has a cult-like following similar to audiences at "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." .
Lee Bros. devour Southern subtleties
Here's a hint: Do not call the Lee Bros. before lunch. Because to hear those two wax rhapsodic over Southern food surely will make an empty tummy rumble. Trust me. Matt Lee and Ted Lee were born in New York but recovered in Charleston, S.C., landing there at ages of 10 and 8, respectively. They got caught up in the sensory delight of Southern food from the gathering end to the gobbling one. An unmistakable note of boyish glee lifted Matt's voice when he talked about dropping a chicken neck in Charleston harbor to catch crabs. "That was so wild to us," Matt said. Throwing a cast net? "Insanely cool," Ted said. Matt and Ted Lee are the fellas behind the Lee Bros. Boiled Peanut Catalogue, now with something heavier for the table. They'll be in Mississippi next week to talk about The Lee Bros.
