| Adventures In Vegetarianism
In her editor's letter in the April issue of Gourmet magazine, Ruth Reichl announces the arrival of a new feature devoted to hearty vegetarian recipes. With more and more restaurants offering a variety of vegetarian and even vegan dishes on their menus, in combination with the growing concern for environmentally-friendly living, the appeal of fresh, locally-grown, seasonal vegetables and legumes is suddenly extremely important in the food world. I recently decided I had better give in to the trend and veg out. Okay, it wasn't a conscious decision - I was on my second date with the boyishly charming Mr. I'minlikewithyou and he invited me to dinner at his favorite vegan place in San Francisco, Millennium. He promised me it was haute vegan cuisine with not even the slightest hint of hippie and an atmosphere that was chic, sophisticated, and elegant; boy was he right.
Come On, Have a Taste!
There is only one day left to send your palate off to paradise, and Saturday is the ticket as the Taste of Vail continues with cooking, wine seminars and the Grand Tasting and Dance. The Taste hit turbo drive on Friday with the Mountaintop picnic, in which dozens of the valley’s most exquisite restaurants offered exotic and delicious dishes and wineries handed out samples of their most coveted reserves. The desserts topped the treat totem for us. Vail Gourmet Cookie CO. had plenty of people loitering around its baskets of mint chocolate shortbreads and caramel-injected brownies while Chap’s dished out mini limoncello custard cakes with blueberry compote. You’re drooling, aren’t you?The savory offerings ranged from fish tacos to Colby meatballs to brie soup with truffles. If any of this sounds appealing, here’s what’s left to taste on Saturday, April 14.9:30 to 11 a.m.: The Food Network’s Michael Chiarello demonstrates the art of Southern Italian Cuisine at the Lionshead Marriott12 to 1:30 p.m.: Spanish Wine Seminar discussion and tasting of Spain’s comeback into the world of indulgent grape beverages at the Lionshead Marriott.2:30 to 4 p.m.: Grape nuts will have a ball with this rare chance to taste eight vintages from Domaine Louis Latour at the Vertical Tasting; Lionshead Marriott.7 p.m.
American Culinary Federation Awards Seal of Approval to Folgers ...
The American Culinary Federation, Inc. (ACF), the nation's largest organization of professional cooks, recently awarded its Seal of Approval to Folgers Gourmet Selections Morning Caf, a premium coffee blend meant for everyday enjoyment. Folgers Gourmet Selections earned the federation's endorsement following extensive testing by a panel of ACF-certified chefs. Testing criteria evaluated ease of use, versatility and adaptability of product, consistency of physical properties, application of product to service procedures and, above all, flavor. Folgers Gourmet Selections Morning Caf features only Folgers' most aromatic, 100 percent Arabica beans that are specially blended and slowly roasted to provide consumers with a premium coffee variety that has a great depth of taste and aroma. With an average $2.50 less per bag than Starbucks at-home blend, Folgers Gourmet Selections Morning Caf is not only a tremendous value, but it was also preferred over Starbucks Breakfast Blend in a recent nationwide taste test.1 "As consumers become increasingly sophisticated on the culinary front, they are seeking a broader array of gourmet experiences, including their morning cup of coffee," said Doug McGraw, Vice President of Global Coffee for Procter & Gamble.
Lyla's, a new gourmet kitchen and cafe, opens in Chappaqua
CHAPPAQUA - "SoHo in Chappaqua" is how Omar Kaghat likes to describe his new eatery in town. Lyla's, a hip gourmet kitchen and cafe on King Street that opened this month, is Kaghat's second venture in the hamlet. He and his brother-in-law, Joe Quartararo, opened Le Jardin Du Roi, a popular French restaurant also on King Street, seven years ago. On a recent afternoon, pedestrians on the sidewalk gaped through Lyla's bay windows lined with a crepe bar and pots of soup. Inside, counters offering wraps and sandwiches, pastries and chocolates, and a fresh salad bar contributed to the lunchtime din. Lyla's, named for Kaghat's 7-year-old daughter, fills the spot vacated by Jessie's Closet, a clothing boutique that went out of business. "I'd rather have crepes than tie-dye T-shirts," said Lisa Mariano, 36, of Chappaqua, as she dug into her Nutella and banana crepe.
Never mess with a professional
I MAY as well have had the words "gullible tourist" tattooed on my forehead as I strolled along the white-sand beach of Seminyak. Other beachgoers were dressed to show off their tans in board shorts and bikinis. Embarking for Bali at short notice, I was overly pale, underprepared and overdressed, sweating in the humidity. As I strolled along the beach, the hawkers made their approach. I have never been a fan of the haggle, but I knew it was all part of the Bali experience, and I had a tactic. I'll be harsh but fair, I told myself, and silly as I may look, those hagglers will soon get the message this pasty Aussie is not to be messed with. I dismissed each and every approach. It seemed too easy. Was there no worthy opponent? Then Tony the budding artist popped up.
