Spa cuisine a celebration of food that is healthy

Losing weight doesn't have to be a diet of bland food items as a couple of local chefs are producing exciting and flavorful dishes that are big on creativity and low on calories, as Yang Di reports. As more people continue to make the connection between wellness of mind and body, a few city spas are finding themselves at the forefront of this growing trend with its natural emphasis on body treatment and nutrition. An important component of this concept is spa cuisine consisting of light, healthy and nutritious dishes. Modern spa cuisine is not about dieting or weight-loss programs but rather a celebration of what is good and natural. Today's spa cuisine is as multi-disciplined as any of the culinary arts - and as varied as a spa treatment menu. The creative and appetizing menus at spas around the world reflect the chef's culinary expertise and personal influences, rivaling gourmet restaurants.

Relearning how to look at art, with Amelia Arenas

After arriving at the museum, you pay your admission and join the line of people shuffling from one work to another. In front of each exhibit you stoop to read the accompanying wall text, and then have a brief glance at the work itself before moving on. Reaching the end of the show, you suppress a guilty feeling of relief, browse the knickknacks in the gift shop, and then enjoy a gourmet coffee in the stylish cafe. And by the time you leave, barely a word of what you read about the works remains in mind, and the pictures themselves are slipping from the memory.

Hands up anyone who hasn't been guilty of this, at least sometimes.

But if the last exhibition you visited didn't engage your mental faculties, console yourself with the thought that it might not be your fault.

Pizza is one of our favorite Super Sunday foods, but popcorn and chips are other popular snacks. According to the Super Bowl’s Web site, Americans will eat 4,000 tons of popcorn and 14,500 tons of chips.

Central Park Pizza, a grand slam

Batter up! Spring training is over. The outfield is green. And Major League Baseball has brought back the boys of summer for another exciting season. While everyone's trying to figure out how to get out of the stadium parking lot, why not spend your time improving your swing and catching a great meal? Central Park Pizza may be hidden in the Batcade, but the food is definitely out of the park.On my first visit to Central Park Pizza, I took a group of friends more interested in taking their cuts in the batting cages than eating from what they assumed would be typical concession-stand fare. If your line-up card included over-priced hot dogs and nachos, you should have headed for Chavez Ravine.Central Park Pizza has an Italian-based menu that rivals that of any formal restaurant. Sure, there are plastic tables and chairs, but who needs linen tablecloths and a wine list when you can enjoy fettuccine Alfredo in a splash of white wine or chicken Marsala marinara with fresh basil in a sweet wine, tomato and herb sauce? Plus, they serve gourmet pizzas and sandwiches. We ordered a couple of pizzas.

Catch a film screening at Royal Oak Public Library

You can't buy nachos, super-sized soft drinks or Junior Mints, but the free film screenings this month at the Royal Oak Pubic Library do come with snacks, and each one is followed by a thought-provoking discussion. As part of the "Everyone's Reading" program which focuses on issues of racial inequality and civil rights, the ROPL will show Mississippi Masala, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 11. The 1991 film, rated R, tells the story of an interracial affair between a black carpet cleaner (Denzel Washington) and a young Indian woman (Sarinta Choudhury) who has emigrated from Uganda to the American South. Their relationship causes a stir in their sleepy Mississippi town, exposing everyone's worst racial fears and prejudices.

The library's Independent Film Movement series presents A Simple Curve, 2 p.m.
