Geoff Oldfather: Water gurus once again tap the right recipe for ...

Most of us take it for granted. We shower and water with it, and as long as sludge isn't dripping from our taps we don't think about it, much less worry that our water tastes better than, say, the water in Okeechobee County.

Not the folks who run our water utilities — especially those in Martin County.

They claim bragging rights.

For the third year in a row their water has been voted "best tasting" in the American Water Works Association's Region 8.

Martin County water beat out water from 11 other systems, including Indian River, St. Lucie, Glades, Highlands, Martin, and Okeechobee counties.

When I heard the news I decided I wanted some independent verification and a chance at my own taste test. I especially wanted to compare Indian River and St. Lucie County's water to Martin County's water.

Eva Longoria Gets Second Bridal Shower

Typically, a woman gets to have one bridal bash before her wedding. But for Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, two bridal showers should do the trick. On Sunday, April 15, Housewives co-star Felicity Huffman gave Longoria an outdoor bridal bash at her Los Angeles home. The small co-ed gathering consisted of a sit-down lunch wherein guests feasted on a salad bar with chicken salmon, shrimp, gourmet cheeses with various wines and martinis. For desert, they gorged on chocolate chip cookies, brownies and white-chocolate pastries. Of course, guests also showered Longoria with gifts. Longoria told People, "It was such a special day! Felicity and my maid of honor, Brittany Olson, went above and beyond to make the whole afternoon beautiful and memorable. I can't thank them enough. I'm extremely blessed to be surrounded by my family, friends and co-workers and to have had them all together to celebrate this special moment in my life." Apart from Huffman’s bridal bash, Longoria aslo got an additional bridal party.shower This time, it was a girls-only party thrown by Desperate Housewives co-star Teri Hatcher.

Pet food: Gourmet vs. good enough

Grammy's Pot Pie needed a little more salt. So did the chicken thighs with peas, carrots and potatoes made by Fromm.

The pumpkin crumble dessert from Nutro smelled good and had plenty of ground cinnamon but having less than 100 calories per serving helped make up for its bland taste.

These recipes may sound good to you, but the food typically doesn't find its way to a dinner table. This fare - complete with slogans like "It's not dinner without dessert" - is for dogs and cats.

Recent pet-food recalls are driving pet owners to consider gourmet options. At the very least, experts say, pet owners are becoming more educated about what they're serving their animals. Those choices can be beneficial for a dog or cat, but they're likely to be more expensive and in some cases may not be worth the money.

New look for Oceola

The landscape along M-59 and Latson Road in Oceola Township will change significantly in coming months according to a site plan approved by township officials. It is part of a larger development scheduled for completion by 2015.

Oceola Village Centre, part of a 100-acre planned unit development, will include the township's first gasoline station, for which the site plan approval was recently granted, as well as up to four restaurants, two banks, a grocery store, five retailers and four housing developments. An 8,000-square-foot gas station-gourmet wine store, and three connected retail spots that will bring the building's total square footage to 12,000, was approved for the seventh year of a 15-year plan.

Dana Rosenthal, project architect for the gasoline station-gourmet store, is working hard to be the first commercial development in the overall project.
