Best Find: Snacks by the lb.

What it offers: Lots of candy stores have nut-caramel turtles and butter creams, but if you're looking for that candy necklace that made your neck sticky when you were 7, Snacks by the lb. is for you.

The Feasterville store offers new-school and old-school candy. There are the gourmet chocolate-covered pretzels with toppings such as Oreo-cookie crumbles, but there are also Mallo Cups, Necco Wafers, and the wax bottles with the juice inside.

The candy shop stocks sweets that cost between 10 cents and $24, the price tag for a pound of chocolate truffles. There is creamy homemade fudge made by co-owner Tracey Laiken that is decadently rich, and a wide variety of nuts, plain and roasted.

There's more: Snacks by the lb.'s inventory goes beyond the sweet. There are greeting cards, gifts, candles, balloons, and jewelry made by Laiken, who studied glassblowing in Italy.

We're offering a recipe for success

Home cooks, you'll recognize this scenario: You're baking a dish that you've never tried before for a party. It bombs. Completely. And you're left trying to save it.This happened last week after I was seduced by a photo of Stareos, the star-shaped chocolate shortbreads from the old Stars in San Francisco. Paired with sweetened mascarpone cheese, these cookies are " 'gourmet' Oreos," Emily Luchetti writes in her latest cookbook, "Classic Stars Desserts."Luchetti, Stars' former pastry chef, offers a simple recipe. And I've cranked out shortbread before with no problem. So what went wrong?Read this section carefully because I've posted my tweaks to the dish at centralvalley.com. I'll tell you below how you can improve it -- and get help for your own recipes. For starters, a double batch of the thick cookie dough nearly broke my KitchenAid.

Cupcaking: What, where, and how much

Cupcakes aren't just for elementary-schoolers anymore. Bakeries specializing in gourmet cupcakes are springing up in cities all over the country. Though the trend probably started with New York City's Magnolia Bakery (of Sex and the City fame), cupcake mania has officially landed in Pittsburgh. Our cupcake guide can point you to the most delicious cupcakes in the city.

Dozen Cupcakes, Pittsburgh, Murray Avenue, Squirrel Hill

Kelly: When I first stumbled upon Dozen, I could not have been more overjoyed. Despite the cupcakery's tiny storefront, its bright blue interior caught my eye, and I'd go so far as to say that it has changed my life. Inside, I discovered what may be the single greatest cupcake innovation of all time: the Elvis. With banana cake, chocolate hazelnut buttercream filling, and peanut butter icing to top it off, the Elvis is like the dessert combo I've always been searching for.

Cool things we found

Companies are always sending us random products that they sell, we've rounded up some of the coolest -- and some of the strangest.

Fever libido beverage

It kinda looks like an energy drink, but it's supposed to give you a different kind of energy. Sexual energy. Fever calls itself a "libido stimulant beverage" and it's a combination of eight herbs and vanilla flavoring. It can be mixed with alcohol to make cocktails, or you can drink it alone.

It's available at Maloney's Uptown and Game On in Atlantic City and at Glam and 32 Degrees in Philadelphia. You can also buy it in 12-packs online at www.feverbev.com.

Pure silver by est. 1887

The company's name is est. 1887 and their gimmick is infusing clothes with silver. The precious metal is bonded to the fibers in clothes with the purpose of protecting the wearer from 99.9 percent of germs, molds, bacteria and viruses that are in the icky real world.

TAKE YOUR PICNIC

Throwing clumps of clover into her parrain's messy hair will do that to a 3-year-old. Her blond ringlets were wet with perspiration as she twirled around in circles, tiny bare feet amongst the buttercups in bloom.

It was a postcard-perfect spring Saturday, screaming out for a picnic and kite flying. Parrain launched into flying lessons, hoisting the big kite high in the air and helping her wind the string, while I spread the blanket in the grass, opened the basket and assembled our simple lunch: pasta salad, coleslaw, grapes, a half-bottle of cheap red wine, a Thermos of iced tea, a few sugar cookies.

What is it about outdoor dining that can make even cold snack food served from white paper cartons seem so gourmet?

Humans love to eat alfresco.
