| A Rich, Colorful Legacy: Another Chapter in the Storied History of ...
The names are legendary: Desmond Nicholson, Jolyon Byerly, Don Street, Tom Hill, Robin Tatersall, Peter Holmberg, Roy Disney. And lets not forget the boats: Titan, Kialoa, Infinity, Sayonara, Morning Glory, Pyewacket. The sailors and vessels that have distinguished themselves over the four decades of world-class competition in the storied history of Stanford Antigua Sailing Week are a veritable Whos Who in the sport of yacht racing. On the eve of the 40th Anniversary of the classic Caribbean festival of sail this years event is right around the corner, with the action slated to begin on April 29 its an appropriate time to look back on one of yachtings best-known and most highly anticipated events. It was just over 40 years ago that yacht broker Desmond Nicholson and Antiguan hotelier Howard Hulford came up with the idea of a spring regatta that would extend the tourist and sailing seasons for charterers and yachtsmen alike.
Posher side of Pismo Beach
(04-15) 04:00 PDT Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo -- While waiting at the counter to buy a cup of Splash Cafe's sinfully rich clam chowder, I heard a local resident mutter to her companion, "Get this stuff now, before all the Bakersfield people start showing up." For decades, Central Valley residents have swarmed to Central California's beach cities in an attempt to escape the suffocating heat of summer. Bakersfield folks tend to go south of San Luis Obispo, to Pismo Beach and Avila Beach; people in the city where I grew up, the also-stifling Visalia, chose Cayucos, north of San Luis Obispo. I was always envious that Bakersfield claimed Pismo; not only did it have one of the coolest city names ever, it's where Bugs Bunny snacked on clams after tunneling in by way of cartoon Baghdad. Bugs didn't do Cayucos.

Eva Longoria Gets Second Bridal Shower
Typically, a woman gets to have one bridal bash before her wedding. But for Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, two bridal showers should do the trick. On Sunday, April 15, Housewives co-star Felicity Huffman gave Longoria an outdoor bridal bash at her Los Angeles home. The small co-ed gathering consisted of a sit-down lunch wherein guests feasted on a salad bar with chicken salmon, shrimp, gourmet cheeses with various wines and martinis. For desert, they gorged on chocolate chip cookies, brownies and white-chocolate pastries. Of course, guests also showered Longoria with gifts. Longoria told People, "It was such a special day! Felicity and my maid of honor, Brittany Olson, went above and beyond to make the whole afternoon beautiful and memorable. I can't thank them enough. I'm extremely blessed to be surrounded by my family, friends and co-workers and to have had them all together to celebrate this special moment in my life." Apart from Huffman’s bridal bash, Longoria aslo got an additional bridal party.shower This time, it was a girls-only party thrown by Desperate Housewives co-star Teri Hatcher.
Two for $20: Red Robin Gourmet Burgers
Red Robin is a pretty new place out at EastChase so this was my first chance to get out there. I had heard their bugers were the draw there, but that's about it. But hey who doesn't love a good burger? Well vegetarians I guess, but you know what I mean. AT THE TABLE: My friend and I were taken aback by the choices in burgers. Simply put, there are a lot. But after considering the options, decisions were made. I went with their gourmet cheeseburger. It comes with lettuce, tomato, mayo, onions, pickles and their special relish. I opted for sans relish and onions. The burger was quite good. The meat was cooked to order. Everything tasted fresh. I don't know if it was gourmet, but it's better than a lot you'll find in town. My friend went with their bleu cheese burger.
Chilly temps, grilled cheese served up with good music
The greasy aroma of a grilled cheese sandwich wafted throughout Banita Creek Park South Saturday afternoon during the Nacogdoches Americana Music Festival. At the center of the small bundled-up gathering — which had braved the wind, overcast skies and cool-for-April temperatures — was a one-man tent and a mysterious young man called The Texas Grilled Cheese Master. .
Loons ready for season opener
But on a day in which talk around town was centered on the Loons, Mother Nature provided anything but baseball weather. Wind gusts approaching 40 mph brought January wind chills on an April morning, forcing the Loons' workout indoors for the second day in a row. “No matter how cold it is, we just want to get out there and start playing," said right-handed pitcher Steven Johnson, who earlier in the day was named the starter for the season's second game by manager Lance Parrish. Johnson, a 13th round pick in 2005, led the Pioneer League in strikeouts last season and finished with a 3.89 ERA. “I have a lot to improve on [this season]," Johnson said. “I'm hoping to get control of a lot of my off-speed pitches and throw them more for strikes. That's a big thing I need to work on." As expected, prized prospect Clayton Kershaw will take the mound in Thursday's opener.
